Από τις 13 κεντρικές εκκλησίες, αρκετά μοναστήρια και γύρω στα 400 εξωκλήσια που υπάρχουν στην Σύμη, το πιο γνωστό και ξακουστό προσκύνημα είναι το μοναστήρι του Πανορμίτη, που μεταξύ των άλλων θεωρείται προστάτης των ναυτικών και ιδιαίτερα των σφουγγαράδων. Βρίσκεται μέσα σ’ ένα φυσικό λιμανάκι, Πάνορμος, από το οποίο προέρχεται το όνομα Πανορμίτης.
Ο ξενιτεμένος Συμιακός θεωρεί τον Πανορμίτη προστάτη του, και σε κάθε δύσκολη στιγμή και αναποδιά της ζωής του ζητά τη βοήθεια του. Γι’ αυτό ο επισκέπτης του Μοναστηριού βλέπει τόσα τάματα και αφιερώματα που πολλά προέρχονται από ξενιτεμένους Συμιακούς. Πολλοί συμπατριώτες μας εκδηλώνουν την αγάπη τους στον προστάτη τους δίνοντας για χάρη του το όνομα Μιχάλης ή Πανορμίτης στον πρωτότοκο γιο τους. Δεν είναι λίγες οι περιπτώσεις ξενιτεμένων Συμιακών, που ταξιδεύουν χιλιάδες μίλια για να βαφτίσουν τα παιδιά τους στο Μοναστήρι και να του δώσουν το όνομα του.
Συνάμα με τις ατομικές είναι και οι ομαδικές εκδηλώσεις σεβασμού προς τον Πανορμίτη. Οι ξενιτεμένοι Συμιακοί, στην Ελλάδα και σε άλλες χώρες του κόσμου ίδρυσαν συλλόγους που ονομάζονται, κυρίως, Πανορμίτης και Ταξιάρχης. Ο Συμιακός σύλλογος της Ρόδου ονομάζεται Πανορμίτης όπως και του Πειραιά. Το “Συμαϊκό Βήμα”, η εφημερίδα του Συλλόγου έχει για έμβλημα της το μοναστήρι του Πανορμίτη και παλαιότερα η εφημερίδα “Συμαϊκά Νέα” είχε για έμβλημα της την εικόνα του Πανορμίτη.
Πανορμίτης ονομαζόταν ο Συμαϊκός σύλλογος που υπήρχε στην Αλεξάνδρεια της Αιγύπτου και “Πανορμίτειο Γυμνάσιο” το Γυμνάσιο που ίδρυσε ο Νικίτας Χαβιαράς στην χώρα του Νείλου (1927-38), όπως και αυτό που ιδρύθηκε την ίδια εποχή και υπάρχει στην Σύμη.
Ταξιάρχης ονομάζεται ο Συμαϊκός σύλλογος που βρίσκεται στο Sydney της Αυστραλίας και την ημέρα της γιορτής του, κατά το διάστημα της λειτουργίας και στην περιφορά της εικόνας του Αρχαγγέλου Μιχαήλ, οι κωδωνοκρουσίες της εκκλησίας της Αγίας Τριάδας στο Sydney αντικαθίστανται με μαγνητοφωνημένους ήχους από τις καμπάνες του Πανορμίτη. Στην ίδια πόλη υπάρχει και η εκκλησία του Αρχαγγέλου Μιχαήλ που είναι αφιερωμένη στον Πανορμίτη.
Από το 1925-60, που υπήρχε ανθούσα Συμαϊκή παροικία στο Βελγικό Κογκό, οι Συμιακοί που έμεναν στην Kasenga έφτιαξαν μια μικρή εκκλησία που την ονόμασαν Πανορμίτης. Κάθε Κυριακή και γιορτή συγκεντρώνονταν σ’ αυτό το εκκλησάκι και έψαλλαν σχετικές ψαλμωδίες, ύμνους και τροπάρια ανάλογα με την περίπτωση, και την ημέρα της γιορτής του Πανορμίτη έφερναν παπά από την Leopoldville για να λειτουργήσει.
Στις αρχές του 20ου αιώνα, οι πρώτοι Συμιακοί μετανάστες που πήγαν στην Αργεντινή, ίδρυσαν σ’ ένα προάστειο του Buenos Aires, το Remedios De Escalada, την πρώτη Ελληνορθόδοξη εκκλησία στην Νότιο Αμερική και την ονόμασαν San Miguel De Panormita προς τιμή του Πανορμίτη της Σύμης.
Και εδώ στη Αμερική, με την ίδια ευλάβεια, οι Συμιακοί τιμούν και περιβάλλουν τον πολιούχο του νησιού. Πανορμίτη ονόμασαν τον πρώτο Συμαϊκό σύλλογο που ίδρυσαν στο Campbell Ohio, πριν πάνω από ένα αιώνα, και στον Αρχάγγελο Μιχαήλ είναι αφιερωμένη η Ελληνορθόδοξη εκκλησία στην ίδια πόλη. Το ίδιο και οι Συμιακοί που πήγαν στο Tarpon Springs ονόμασαν Ταξιάρχη τον σύλλογο που ίδρυσαν το 1923 και Πανορμίτη το παρεκκλήσι που έκτισαν.
To 1975, βρισκόμενος σε διακοπές στο Daytona Beach FL, σταμάτησα σ’ ένα φημισμένο εστιατόριο θαλασσινών. Μπαίνοντας στο parking, με έκπληξη μου, είδα ένα κότερο παρκαρισμένο με την ονομασία Σύμη. Η έκπληξη μου μετετράπη σε συγκίνηση, όταν μπαίνοντας στο εστιατόριο είδα πάνω στο τοίχο, για διακόσμηση, μια σωσίβιο κουλούρα καϊκιού με το όνομα Πανορμίτης. Το εστιατόριο ήταν του συμπατριώτη μας Σωτήρη Κωνσταντινίδης, ο οποίος το ίδιο βράδυ με κάλεσε για δείπνο στο σπίτι του.
Εκτός από την Σύμη και σε άλλα νησιά τιμάτε ο Πανορμίτης, όπου αρκετοί δίνουν στα παιδιά τους το όνομα Πανορμίτης και πολλά από τα τάματα του μοναστηριού προέρχονται από άλλα νησιά της Δωδεκανήσου και γενικά του Αιγαίου όπως από την Ύδρα. Στην Κάρπαθο τουλάχιστον τρία από τα εξωκλήσια που είναι αφιερωμένα στον Αρχάγγελο Μιχαήλ φέρουν το όνομα Πανορμίτης (Πηγάδια, Βουτσάς και Τρίστομο). Επίσης, σε πολλά Καρπαθιακά δίστιχα, όπως αυτό που ακολουθεί, αναφέρονται στον Πανορμίτη:
«Ω Πανορμίτη Συμιακέ, που κατοικάς στη Σύμη.
Έλα και ευλόγησε, τ’ αντρόγυνο που γίνει».
Κάθε καλοκαίρι 300.000 χιλιάδες, κυρίως τουρίστες, επισκέπτονται το μοναστήρι του Πανορμίτη με ημερόπλοια από την Ρόδο, και τις ημέρες γύρω από την γιορτή αρκετές χιλιάδες έρχονται για να προσκυνήσουν. Το ίδιο και οι Συμιακοί μαζί με τους άλλους Δωδεκανησίους που μένουν μακριά από την πατρίδα τους, τιμούν και γιορτάζουν την γιορτή του.
Όπως γίνεται κάθε χρόνο σε όλες τις παροικίες, από τότε που οι πρώτοι Συμιακοί πάτησαν στην Αμερική, με την ίδια λαμπρότητα ο Συμαϊκός Σύλλογος «Αίγλη» γιόρτασε την γιορτή του Πανορμίτη. Την Κυριακή 5 Νοεμβρίου στην εκκλησία της Αγίας Αικατερίνης στην Αστόρια της Νέας Υόρκης, με την παρουσία Συμιακών, άλλων Δωδεκανησίων και ομογενών, τελέστηκε η θεία λειτουργία και ακολούθησε δοξολογία και αρτοκλασία προς τιμή του Πανορμίτη. Ακολούθησε δεξίωση στην αίθουσα Νίκου Ανδριώτη όπου προσφέρθηκαν γλυκά, καφές, αναψυκτικά και παραδοσιακά εδέσματα.

Panormitis was celebrated by the Simians in America

Of the 13 central churches, several monasteries and around 400 chapels that exist in Symi, the most famous and well-known place of pilgrimage is the monastery of Panormitis, which, among others, is considered the patron saint of sailors and especially sponge divers. It is located in a small natural port, Panormos, from which the name Panormitis comes.
The expatriate Simian considers Panormitis his protector, and in every difficult moment and setback of his life he asks for his help. That is why the visitor to the Monastery sees so many offerings, many of which come from expatriate Symians. Many of our compatriots show their love for their patron by naming their first-born son Michael or Panormitis for his sake. There are not a few cases of expatriate Simians, who travel thousands of miles to baptize their children in the Monastery and give them his name.
Together with the individual, there are also group events of honor for Panormitis. The expatriate Symians, in Greece and in other countries of the world, founded associations called, mainly, Panormitis and Taxiarches. The Symian society of Rhodes is called Panormitis just like that of Piraeus. “Symain Vima”, the association’s newspaper, has the Panormitis monastery as its emblem, and the “Symain News” newspaper used to have the image of Panormitis as its emblem.
Panormitis was the name of the Symian society that existed in Alexandria, Egypt, and “Panormitian Gymnasium” was the name of the Gymnasium founded by Nikitas Haviaras in the country of the Nile (1927-38), just like the one founded at the same time and existing in Symi.
Taxiarches is the name of the Symian society in Sydney Australia, and on the day of Panormitis celebration, during the liturgy and during the procession of the icon of Archangel Michael, the bells of the Holy Trinity Church in Sydney are replaced with recorded sounds from the bells of Panormitis. In the same city there is the church of Archangel Michael dedicated to Panormitis.
From 1925-60, when there was a flourishing Simian community in the Belgian Congo, the Simians living in Kasenga built a small church which they called Panormitis. Every Sunday and feast day they gathered in this little chapel and sang related psalms, hymns and tropes according to the occasion, and on Panormitis’ feast day they brought a priest from Leopoldville to officiate.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the first Symian immigrants who went to Argentina, founded in a suburb of Buenos Aires, Remedios De Escalada, the first Greek Orthodox church in South America and named it San Miguel De Panormita, in honor of Symi’s Panormitis.
And here in America, with the same reverence, the people of Symi honor and surround the patron saint of the island. They named the first Simian association they founded in Campbell Ohio, more than a century ago, Panormitis, and the Greek Orthodox church in the same city is dedicated to Archangel Michael. Likewise, the Symians who went to Tarpon Springs named their society they founded in 1923 Taxiarches and the chapel they built Panormitis.
In 1975, while on vacation in Daytona Beach FL, I stopped at a famous seafood restaurant. Entering the parking lot, to my surprise, I saw a parked boat named Symi. My surprise turned into emotion when entering the restaurant I saw on the wall, for decoration, a lifebuoy of a boat with the name Panormitis. The restaurant belonged to our compatriot Sotiris Konstantinidis, who invited me to his house for dinner that same evening.
Apart from Symi, Panormitis is also honored on the other islands, where many give their children the name Panormitis and many of the monastery’s offerings come from other islands of the Dodecanese and the Aegean in general, such as from Hydra. In Karpathos at least three of the chapels dedicated to Archangel Michael bear the name Panormitis (Pigadia, Voutsas and Tristomo). Also, in many Karpathian couplets, such as the one that follows (in free translation), refer to Panormitis:
“O Panormite Symian, who dwells in Symi.
Come and bless the newlyweds”.
Every summer 300,000 thousand, mostly tourists, visit the monastery of Panormitis by daily boats from Rhodes, and on the days around the feast several thousand come to worship. Likewise, the Symians together with the other Dodecanese who live far from their homeland, honor and celebrate his feast.
As is done every year in all Symian communities, since the first Simians set foot in America, with the same splendor the Symian society “Aegle” celebrated the feast of Panormitis. On Sunday, November 5, at the church of Saint Catherine in Astoria, New York, in the presence of Simians, other Dodecanese and compatriots, the divine service was held, followed by doxology and “artoclasia” (blessing of bread) in honor of Panormitis. A reception followed in the hall of Nikos Andriotis where sweets, coffee, soft drinks and traditional dishes were offered.
