Στη μετατροπή της Αγίας Σοφίας σε τέμενος αναφέρθηκε ο Τούρκος Πρόεδρος , Ρετζέπ Ταγίπ Ερντογάν, με αφορμή την απονομή βραβείων τέχνης στην Κωνσταντινούπολη, χθες το βράδυ .
Τα εν λόγω βραβεία έχουν καθιερωθεί στη μνήμη του στρατευμένου ισλαμιστή Τούρκου ποιητή Νετζίπ Φαζίλ Κισάκιουρεκ, ο οποίος ήταν δεινός μαχητής υπέρ της επαναλειτουργίας της Αγίας Σοφίας ως τέμενος και είχε συγκρουστεί πολιτικά με το κεμαλικό κατεστημένο.
«37 χρόνια μετά το θάνατό του (σ.σ. του ποιητή), είχαμε την τιμή να ανοίξουμε την Αγία Σοφία, που ήταν το μεγαλύτερο όνειρό του. Δόξα στον Αλλάχ. Έπειτα από 80 χρόνια λαχτάρας, σπάσαμε τις αλυσίδες μαζί και αποκαταστήσαμε την Αγία Σοφία στην αρχική της μορφή, σύμφωνα με την επιθυμία του Πορθητή» δήλωσε ο Τούρκος Πρόεδρος από το βήμα της εκδήλωσης.
«Δοξάζω για άλλη μια φορά τον Κύριό μου που μας χάρισε αυτή την τιμή, αυτή την αξιοπρέπεια να χαρούμε το τέλος της αιχμαλωσίας της Αγίας Σοφίας» είπε και πρόσθεσε: «Το να μας μνημονεύουν ως τον Πρόεδρο που άνοιξε ξανά την Αγία Σοφία είναι η μεγαλύτερη τιμή στον κόσμο της καρδιάς μας».
Ο Πρόεδρος Ερντογάν ανέφερε επίσης ότι αυτοί που θα προστατέψουν την Αγία Σοφία είναι οι νέοι, που θα δώσουν το παρών στο κάλεσμα ο καθένας ξεχωριστά. «Όσο αυτό συμβαίνει, Θεού θέλοντος, ο ήχος του Κορανίου από τους τρούλους της Αγίας Σοφίας και το κάλεσμα για προσευχή από τους μιναρέδες της δεν θα παύσουν ποτέ. Το Μέγα Τέμενος της Αγίας Σοφίας θα συνεχίσει να απευθύνεται στις καρδιές των πιστών για πάντα ως σύμβολο του τουρκικού αιώνα» συμπλήρωσε.

We are fortunate to have this clear voice permeating our surroundings.
The article on Aghia Sophia and the illiterate comments of President Erdogan fueled anger in me and many people like me who have been devoted followers of this sacred Christian Cathedral, really I should say Orthodox Temple for Greeks and other orthodox believers. Aghia Sophia proceeded the creation of the nation of Turkey by many, many centuries before!! The church was build in the 4th century or earlier, if my memory does not fail me; the founding of modern Turkey was in 1923 or after the Asia Minor Exodus, if I am not mistaken.
Poets, accomplished or not, have their own view of the world, which can easily lead to racist sentiments as the rest of us. So, the famous poets of Turkey can voice erroneous ideas and misleading desires as common people. However, it is unacceptable for the country’s President, in 2023, to promote the oldest Christian church of the planet as a Muslim temple!! Next time he is praying there he should look very carefully at the existing icons that adorn the walls of Aghia Sophia and remind himself that respect for God, for sacred spaces, for icons and sacred statues, for sacred writings of scripture and faith is the way we show respect for our Very own sacred objects and religious beliefs.
By destroying or confiscating, we are displaying a barbaric attitude— definitely not a 21st century view of the world!! So, Mr. President, please do your homework before you profess to your supporters. And please open Aghia Sophia as a museum so visitors and locals can rejoice in its splendor. The generated funds can be used to help the earthquake survivors, especially improving schools and educational opportunities for the youngsters there. The monument could easily generate large funds that can used to improve the lives of Muslim children!! Yes, that would bring joy to so many of us practicing christians. Small morally sound gestures can bring many beneficial results for the society at large!!
The words and actions of leaders can bring about peaceful or warmongering times. It would be too naive to ask to have the church bells of Aghia Sophia ring for liturgical services, given the warfare climate that permeates around us. But it is not too much to ask of today’s leaders to respect and protect the creations of past civilizations, for they represent the cumulative accomplishments of humanity, of our ancestors and not just groups or modern nations!!
