Να μη σε πάρει η ξενιτιά
Τον Ιούνιο του 1992το περιοδικό Karpathos στο εξώφυλλο του δημοσίευσε την φωτογραφία μιας γριάς που κρατούσε στην αγκαλιά της το 8χρονο εγγόνι της. Μέσα στο μυαλό της γιαγιάς μπήκε ο Νίκος Εμμ. Διάκος και διάβασε τις σκέψεις της για το μέλλον του εγγονιού της και τους φόβους της, μήπως και το πάρει η ξενιτιά.
Πουλί μικρό κι ανήξερο, σκέψου πριχού πετάσεις,
τι άνεμο θα βολευτείς, πια στράτα θία πιάσεις.
Στο πέταμά σου άμα χαθείς, νοιώσεις ορφανεμένο,
να μη καήσεις σε χλαΐ, να κελαδίσεις ξένο.
Παρ’ την ευχή μου φιλακτό, όσο κι αν ξεστρατήσεις,
το δρόμο σου να ξαναβρείς, και πίσω να ’υρίσεις.

Don’t get carried away by a strange land
In June 1992 “KARPATHOS” magazine published on its cover the photo of an old woman holding her 8-year-old grandson in her arms. Nick Emm. Diakos entered the grandmother’s mind and read her thoughts about her grandson’s future and her fears, lest a strange land takes him away.
Small and ignorant bird, think before you fly,
what wind will you be comfortable with, what road will take.
At your fly, if you get lost, and feel orphaned,
don’t sit on any branch, don’t sing on a foreign branch.
Take my blessing for protection, no matter how you stray,
to find your way again, and return.
