Ένα από τα πιο αγαπημένα τραγούδια που τραγουδούσαν οι Ιταλοί στρατιώτες στην Κάρπαθο ήταν το “Campagnola bella” που αναφέρεται στην όμορφη χωριατοπούλα που έμοιαζε με βασιλοπούλα. Το τραγούδι γράφτηκε το 1939 από τον Eldo Di Lazzaro με αναφορά στην όμορφη Campagnola μετά από την επίσκεψη της στην πόλη και επιστροφή της στο χωριό. Αλλά περισσότερο το τραγούδι αναφέρεται στην περιγραφή της ζωής και στις ομορφιές των χωριών της Ιταλίας που βρίσκονται στην περιοχή Abruzzo, ανατολικά της Ρώμης.
Οι Ιταλοί που υπηρετούσαν στην Κάρπαθο αγαπούσαν αυτό το τραγούδι επειδή ήταν χωριατόπαιδα και τους έφερνε εικόνες από το χωριό τους και θα τους θύμιζε και κάποια Campagnola. Σε πολλές περιπτώσεις άκουγες τους Ιταλούς στρατιώτες να τραγουδούν το “Campagnola bella” εκεί που δεν το περίμενες, και εμείς τα παιδιά, αν και δεν καταλαβαίναμε τι έλεγε, μας άρεσε να τους ακούμε και μας το πάθος που το τραγουδούσαν.
Canta … canta
Στα Πηγάδια στην περιοχή Κονάκι οι Ιταλοί είχαν δεσμεύσει τους τρεις φούρνους που υπήρχαν του Γιώργου Λαμπρίδη, Γιάννη Γεργατσούλη και Ευδοξίας Πρωτόπαπα και λίγο πιο πέρα του Γιώργη Λειβαδιώτη για τις ανάγκες του Ιταλικού στρατού. Την ίδια εποχή στο Κονάκι στεγαζόταν η Compamia Commando του Ιταλικού συντάγματος υπό τον ταγματάρχη Camadra που έμενε λίγο πιο πάνω στο ανώι του Λαμπρίδη με την γυναίκα του και την κουνιάδα του που δίδασκε στο Ιταλικό σχολείο.
Ένα βράδυ, ο Camadra, φεύγοντας από το Κονάκι και πηγαίνοντας για το σπίτι του πέρασε απέξω από τον φούρνο του Λαμπρίδη και ακούοντας τραγούδια μπήκε μέσα να δει τι συμβαίνει. Σε μια μεγάλη ξύλινη σκάφη είχαν βάλει τέσσερα-πέντε τσουβάλια αλεύρι και δυο-τρεις ξυπόλητοι στρατιώτες το ζύμωναν με τα πόδια τους, και για να περάσουν την ώρα τους χόρευαν και τραγουδούσαν το “Campagnola bella”.
Μόλις οι στρατιώτες είδαν ξαφνικά τον ταγματάρχη τα ‘χασαν και σταμάτησαν, αλλά αυτός με την ψυχραιμία που τον διέκρινε του λέγει Canta … canta (τραγουδάτε … τραγουδάτε). Από το ίδιο ψωμί θα έτρωγε κι’ αυτός.

During the war years in Karpathos – Italian soldiers sing “La campagnola bella”

One of the most favorite songs sung by the Italian soldiers in Karpathos was “Campagnola bella” which refers to the beautiful country girl who looked like a princess. The song was written in 1939 by Eldo Di Lazzaro in reference to the beautiful Campagnola after her visit to the city and her return to the village. But the song is more about describing the life and the beauties of the Italian villages in the Abruzzo region, east of Rome. The Italians serving in Karpathos loved this song because they were country people and it brought back images of their village and would also remind them of another Campagnola. Many times, we could hear the Italian soldiers singing “Campagnola bella” where you least expected them, and we children, although did not understand what they were saying, loved to hear them sing it passionately.

In Pigadia in the Konaki area, the Italians took control of the three furnaces that existed of George Lampridis, John Gergatsoulis and Evdoxias Protopapas and a little further George Livadiotis’ for the needs of the Italian army. At the same time, Konaki housed the Compamia Commando of the Italian regiment under Major Camadra who lived a little farther at Lambridis upper floor with his wife and sister-in-law who taught at the Italian school.
One evening, Camadra leaving Konaki and going home, passed outside Lambridis’ furnaces, and listening to songs went inside to see what was happening.
