Η ανάγκη της μεταξύ τους επικοινωνίας, η διατήρηση των παραδοσιακών εθίμων, η αλληλοβοήθεια και η αντιμετώπιση των προβλημάτων του νησιού τους ώθησε στην δημιουργία των πρώτων Καρπαθιακών συλλόγων στην Αμερική, μέχρι να έρθει η μέρα της επιστροφής. Η γέννηση των πρώτων αμερικανογεννημένων Καρπαθόπουλων κατέρριψε τις σκέψεις περί προσωρινής παραμονής και κατέδειξε την ανάγκη δημιουργίας κεντρικού συλλογικού φορέα, επιφορτισμένου να συντηρεί και να προβάλλει την πολιτισμική κληρονομιά της Καρπάθου.
Πως άρχισε
Το 1974, στη γιορτή της Βασιλόπιττας της Καρπαθιακής Ομοσπονδίας, μίλησε σχετικά ο γιατρός Μιχάλης Γεργατσούλης και στο 1ο Παγκαρπαθιακό Συνέδριο της Αμερικής πρότεινε την ίδρυση Παγκαρπαθιακού Ιδρύματος που θα μεριμνούσε για τις ανάγκες της Καρπαθιακής παροικίας και θα προσπαθούσε να διασώσει ό,τι μπορούσε από την πολιτισμική παράδοση και κληρονομιά.
Την πραγματοποίηση του έργου μπορούσε να αναλάβει η Καρπαθιακή Ομοσπονδία, αλλά για δυο λόγους δεν έπρεπε να το κάνει. Χρειαζόντουσαν μεγάλα χρηματικά ποσά που, όπως είχε διδάξει η πείρα, θα προέρχονταν από μεγάλους δωρητές που θα ήθελαν να εκμεταλλευτούν τα οφέλη της αμερικανικής φορολογικής νομοθεσίας. (Επίσης, το Ίδρυμα θα απαλλασσόταν $30.000 το χρόνο ως φόρο ακίνητης περιουσίας του «Καρπάθικου Σπιτιού»). Η Καρπαθιακή Ομοσπονδία δεν μπορούσε να αποχτήσει το “tax exempt status”, που θα απολάμβανε το Ίδρυμα, επειδή είχε αναμειχθεί στην πολιτική υποστηρίζοντας ομογενείς και φιλέλληνες Αμερικανούς πολιτικούς για να προασπίσει τα Ελληνικά εθνικά δίκαια.
Δύσκολο Ξεκίνημα
Το ξεκίνημα δεν ήταν εύκολο, οι ρομαντικοί που πίστεψαν και αγκάλιασαν την ιδέα ήταν λίγοι, οι πολλοί ήταν δύσκολο να πεισθούν και ακόμη πιο δύσκολο να βρεθούν τα αναγκαία χρήματα. Ύστερα από πολλές προσπάθειες η συστηματική εργασία άρχισε το 1980 όταν πρόεδρος της Ομοσπονδίας ανάλαβε ο ιατρός Μιχάλης Γεργατσούλης. Μέσα στο χρόνο συντάχθηκε το καταστατικό, αναγνωρίστηκε το Ίδρυμα από την πολιτεία του New Jersey και άρχισε η εγγραφή μελών. Η εγγραφή των συλλόγων ορίστηκε στις $10.000 και $500 των απλών μελών.
Το προσωρινό ΔΣ ξεκίνησε μεθοδικά και συστηματικά την εγγραφή μελών και την συγκέντρωση χρημάτων. Η Ομοσπονδία, που από την ίδρυση της προέβλεπε τις εξελίξεις, περιόρισε τα έξοδά της, δέσμευσε τα αποθέματα της και στην κατάλληλη στιγμή πρόσφερε $60.000. Την Ομοσπονδία ακολούθησαν οι σύλλογοι «Ποσειδών», «Ομόνοια», «Άγιος Παντελεήμων», «Άγιοι Ανάργυροι», «Καρπαθιακή Ένωση Νέων», «Άγιος Γεώργιος» και «Υπαπαντή», από $10.000.
Πριν των συλλόγων άρχισε η εγγραφή των ατομικών μελών, επειδή ήταν πιο εύκολο να πείσεις κάποιο να προσφέρει $500 παρά τη ΓΣ ενός συλλόγου να δώσει $10.000. Πρώτα άρχισε η εγγραφή των πιο πρόθυμων που προσπαθούσαν να πείσουν συγγενείς και φίλους τους να ακολουθήσουν το παράδειγμα τους. Αρκετοί έγραψαν τις γυναίκες και τα παιδιά τους για να αυξηθούν τα μέλη. Αργότερα ήλθαν και οι πιο δύσκολοι. Με το καιρό τα μέλη έφτασαν τα 100, πέρασαν τα 200 και συνέχισαν να αυξάνουν.
Παράλληλα με την εγγραφή των μελών, το Ίδρυμα χρησιμοποίησε κι άλλες μεθόδους για να αυξήσει τα έσοδα του: ανακήρυττε μεγάλους ευεργέτες αυτούς που πρόσφεραν $50.000, ευεργέτες $10.000, μεγάλους δωρητές $5.000 και δωρητές $2.000. Στη πρώτη κατηγορία ανήκει ο Νίκος Κουρός και στις άλλες κατηγορίες δεκάδες συμπατριώτες μας. Πρέπει να τονιστεί η συμβολή του περιοδικού «Karpathos»: σε κάθε τεύχος δημοσίευε και ξαναδημοσίευε τα ονόματα μελών, ευεργετών και δωρητών, κεντρίζοντας την εγγενή ανθρώπινη ανάγκη για προβολή και αναγνωρισιμότητα.
Αντί για στεφάνια
Οι θερμοί υποστηρικτές του Ιδρύματος, αντί να προσφέρουν στεφάνια και λουλούδια για να τιμήσουν προσφιλή αποδημήσαντα πρόσωπα, εξέφραζαν τη τιμή προς τους νεκρούς με δωρεές στο Ίδρυμα και όταν πέθαινε στενό συγγενικό τους πρόσωπο προέτρεπαν τους συγγενείς και φίλους τους, αντί για λουλούδια να δώσουν το αντίτιμο ως δωρεά στο Ίδρυμα. Το Ίδρυμα καθιέρωσε το ετήσιο Παγκαρπαθιακό μνημόσυνο όπου, εκτός των ανωτέρω μνημονεύονταν τα αποθανόντα μέλη του Ιδρύματος και όσοι άλλοι έκαναν δωρεές στη μνήμη αγαπημένων τους. Σήμερα μνημονεύονται αρκετές εκατοντάδες αείμνηστοι στο Παγκαρπαθιακό μνημόσυνο, απ’ αυτή την προσπάθεια το Ίδρυμα συγκέντρωσε περισσότερα από $100.000.
Το Ίδρυμα καθιέρωσε λαχειοφόρο αγορά, με λαχείο που κληρωνόταν στην γιορτή της Βασιλόπιτας. Το λαχείο κυκλοφορούσε μεταξύ των μελών του Ιδρύματος και όλων των Καρπαθίων της Αμερικής, δίνοντας την ευκαιρία σε όλους τους Καρπάθιους να βοηθήσουν. Το λαχείο απέδωσε περισσότερα από $100.000.
Αγορά κτηρίου
Μέσα σε δέκα χρόνια το Ίδρυμα συγκέντρωσε πάνω από $600.000 και οι υπεύθυνοι προσανατολίστηκαν στην αγορά κτιρίου που θα εξυπηρετούσε τις δραστηριότητες των Καρπαθιακών συλλόγων και τις ανάγκες της Καρπαθιακής παροικίας. Τελικά, το 1991, αγοράστηκε ένα διώροφο κτήριο με parking, στη πιο κεντρική λεωφόρο του Union NJ. Το κτήριο διαμορφώθηκε σε πολιτιστικό κέντρο με αίθουσες εκδηλώσεων και συνεδριάσεων, εντευκτήριο, «Καρπάθικο Σπίτι» με τον παραδοσιακό σοφά, βιβλιοθήκη και γραφεία για τους συλλόγους. Θεωρείται από τα σπουδαιότερα ομογενειακά πολιτιστικά κέντρα στην Αμερική.
Μετά την αγορά και διαμόρφωση του κτηρίου το Ίδρυμα συνέχισε το fund raising. Το δάνειο που πήρε και ο εργολάβος που ανέλαβε τη μεταρρύθμιση του κτηρίου και τη διαμόρφωση του «Καρπάθικου Σπιτιού» έπρεπε να πληρωθούν. Στις παλαιές εκδηλώσεις προστέθηκε το Bingo, που απέδωσε περισσότερα από $100.000. Το δάνειο που αφορούσε στο Καρπάθικο Σπίτι εξοφλήθηκε και ένα μέρος του κτηρίου ενοικιάστηκε. Το Ίδρυμα απέκτησε περιουσία αξίας εκατομμυρίων δολαρίων που αποδίδει σεβαστό εισόδημα για την πραγματοποίηση των σκοπών του Ιδρύματος.
Υποτροφίες
Παράλληλα με την δημιουργία του «Καρπάθικου Σπιτιού» το Ίδρυμα έστρεψε το ενδιαφέρον του στην σπουδάζουσα νεολαία. Για περισσότερα από 40 χρόνια συνεχίζει το πρόγραμμα υποτροφιών, που παρέλαβε από την Καρπαθιακή Ομοσπονδία. Κάθε χρόνο, στην γιορτή των υποτροφιών τιμά τις επιδόσεις της νέας γενιάς στις επιστήμες, στις τέχνες και στα γράμματα και χορηγεί υποτροφίες σε Καρπαθόπουλα που φοιτούν σε ανώτερα εκπαιδευτικά ιδρύματα. Αρκετοί Καρπάθιοι κατέχουν αξιόλογες θέσεις σε Πανεπιστήμια, ιδιωτικές εταιρίες και κρατικές υπηρεσίες και πολλοί νέοι φοιτούν στα πιο φημισμένα πανεπιστήμια της Αμερικής.
Μνημόσυνο
Από το 1988 την Κυριακή που συμπίπτει με το Ψυχοσάββατο, το Ίδρυμα τελεί Παν-Καρπαθιακό μνημόσυνο σε μια από τις εκκλησίες του New Jersey όπου συχνάζουν πολλοί Καρπάθιοι (Αγίου Δημητρίου στο Union, Αγίου Γεωργίου στο Clifton, Αγίου Αθανασίου στο Paramus) εις μνήμη των αποθανόντων μελών και ευεργετών και όσων έγιναν δωρεές στην μνήμη τους. Οι περισσότεροι που παρευρίσκονται στο μνημόσυνο είναι από το New Jersey και τη Νέα Υόρκη, αλλά και από μακρινές πόλεις και πολιτείες της Αμερικής, ακόμη και από την Ελλάδα.
Μετά την Θεία λειτουργία και το μνημόσυνο γίνεται δεξίωση στο χολ της εκκλησίας, όπου προσφέρεται γεύμα με παραδοσιακά Καρπαθιακά φαγητά, γλυκά, φρούτα, καφές, αναψυκτικά, δωρεές εις μνήμη συμπατριωτών μας, σε όλο το εκκλησίασμα. Στο πρόγραμμα που ακολουθεί προβάλλονται οι φωτογραφίες 700 και πλέον μνημονευομένων με σύντομα βιογραφικά σημειώματα, και ενδιάμεσα απαγγέλλονται παραδοσιακά Καρπάθικα μοιρολόγια: “Η κόρη που θέλει να βγη στο Πάνω κόσμο” και “Ο βοσκός παλεύει με τον Χάροντα”. Ορισμένες φορές η σοπράνο Νικολέτ Μαυρολέων τραγούδησε το “Ave Maria” του Fran Schubert και το “Allerseelen” του Richard Straus και η Ιουλία Βέργη το “Amazing Grace” του John Newton.
Αρκετές φορές το καλοκαίρι στην Κάρπαθο, με την συνεργασία της Ιεράς Μητροπόλεως, τελέστηκε Παν-Καρπαθιακό αρχιερατικό μνημόσυνο από τον Μητροπολίτη Αμβρόσιο στο Μητροπολιτικό ναό στο Απέρι, στην Βαγγελίστρα στα Πηγάδια και στην Παναγία της Πλαγιάς στην Βωλάδα και ακολούθησε το καθιερωμένο πολιτιστικό πρόγραμμα.
Πολιτιστικά
Μέσα στις άλλες δραστηριότητες του Ιδρύματος περιλαμβάνεται η οργάνωση τιμητικών δείπνων προς τιμή των Μεγάλων ευεργετών Νίκου και Ολυμπίας Κουρού, και προς τον ιατρό Μιχάλη Γεργατσούλη για τις μεγάλες του υπηρεσίες προς το Ίδρυμα. Οργάνωσε βιβλιοπαρουσιάσεις και με συνεργασία της Ομοσπονδίας παρουσίασε αναπαράσταση του Καρπαθιακού γάμου και άλλων παραδοσιακών εθίμων. Επίσης ενίσχυσε οικονομικά την έκδοση «Προϊστορική Κάρπαθος» του καθηγητή Μανώλη Μελά και την «Ιστορία της Καρπαθιακής Παροικίας της Αμερικής» του Μανώλη Κασσώτη.
Διοικητικά Συμβούλια
Στην αρχή το Ίδρυμα διοικούταν από οργανωτική επιτροπή με πρόεδρο τον ιατρό Μιχάλη Γεργατσούλη, γραμματέα Κωστή Μικροπαντρεμένο, μέλη τους Μανώλη Κασσώτη, Γιώργο Μανωλιό, Γιάννη Σακελλάρη, Γιάννη Ζαβόλα και Γιώργο Παπαδάκη, και το 1985, μετά την εγγραφή αρκετών μελών, εξελέγη το πρώτο ΔΣ με την ακόλουθη σύνθεση: πρόεδρος ιατρός Μιχάλης Γεργατσούλης, 1ος αντιπρόεδρος Φρίξος Βόζος, 2ος αντιπρόεδρος – Κωστής Μικροπαντρεμένος, γεν. γραμματέας Βάσος Ν. Χαλκιάς, ειδ. γραμματέας Νίκος Αντιμησιάρης, ταμίας Μανώλης Κασσώτης, σύμβουλοι: Γιάννης Σακελλάρης, Ηλίας Παχούντης, Βάσος Γ. Χαλκιάς, Παναγιώτης Κωνσταντινίδης, Γιώργος Γιαννόπουλος, Αλέξανδρος Κούτουλο, Εμμανουήλ Μαραγκάκης, Ιωάννα Αλεξιάδη, Πόπη Παπαδάκη.

Karpathian Societies in America – Pan Karpathian Foundation

The need to communicate with each other, to maintain traditional customs, to help each other and to deal with the island’s problems prompted them to create the first Karpathian societies in America, until the day of their return came. The birth of the first American-born Karpathians overthrew thoughts of temporary residence and demonstrated the need to create a central society, tasked with preserving and promoting the cultural Karpathian heritage.
How started
In 1974, at the Karpathian Federation’s “Vasilopita” celebration, doctor Michael Gergatsoulis spoke about it and at the 1st Pan-Karpathian Convention of America he proposed the establishment of a Pan-Karpathian Foundation that would take care of the needs of the Karpathian community and try to save what it could from the cultural tradition and heritage.
The realization of the project could have been undertaken by the Karpathian Federation, but for two reasons it should not have been. Large sums of money were needed which, experience had taught, would come from big donors who would want to take advantage of the benefits of the American tax code. Also, the Foundation would be exempt from $30,000 a year from the “Karpathian House” property taxes. The Karpathian Federation could not obtain the “tax exempt status”, which the Foundation would have enjoyed, because it had become involved in politics by supporting Greek Americans and pro-Hellenic American politicians to defend Greek national rights.
Difficult Start
The beginning was not easy, the romantics who believed and embraced the idea were few, the many were difficult to convince and even more difficult to find the necessary money. After many attempts, systematic work began in 1980 when the presidency of the Federation was assumed by doctor Michael Gergatsoulis. Within a year the bylaws were drawn up, the Foundation was recognized by the state of New Jersey and enrollment began. Membership for the societies was set at $10,000 and $500 for individual members.
The interim board methodically and systematically began the membership and fundraising. The Federation, which from its establishment anticipated the developments, limited its expenses, reserves it money and at the right moment donated $60,000. The Federation was followed by “Poseidon”, “Omonoia”, “Saint Panteleimon”, “Saint Anargyri”, “Karpathian Youth”, “Saint George” and “Yapanti”, each donating $10,000.
Before societies individual memberships began, it was easier for an individual to give $500 than to convince a society’s General Assembly to give $10,000. First began the registration of the most willing, who tried to convince their relatives and friends to follow their example. Several signed up their wives and children to increase membership. Later came the most difficult ones. Over time the membership reached 100, crossed 200 and continued to grow.
Along with enrolling members, the Foundation used other methods to increase its income: it announced major benefactors those who gave $50,000, benefactors of $10,000, major donors of $5,000, and donors of $2,000. In the first category belongs Nick Kouros and in the other categories dozens of our compatriots. The contribution of the magazine “Karpathos” must be emphasized: in each issue it published and republished the names of members, benefactors and donors, stimulating the inherent human need for visibility and recognition.
Instead of wreaths
The Foundation’s ardent supporters, instead of offering wreaths and flowers to honor departed loved ones, paid tribute to the dead by donating to the Foundation, and when a close relative died, they urged their relatives and friends, instead of flowers, to give the consideration as a donation to the Foundation. The Foundation established the annual Pan Karpathian memorial where, apart from the above, the deceased members of the Foundation were commemorated and those who made donations in memory of their loved ones. Today, several hundred deceased are commemorated at the Pan Karpathian memorial, from this effort the Foundation raised more than $100,000.
The Foundation established a lottery, taking place on the feast of Vasilopita. The lottery was circulated among Foundation members and all Karpathians in America, giving all Karpathians the opportunity to participate. The lottery’s profits exceeded $100,000.
Building purchase
Within ten years, the Foundation collected over $600,000 and those in charge focused on purchasing a building that would serve the activities of the Karpathian societies and the needs of the Karpathian community. Finally, in 1991, a two-story building with parking was purchased in Union NJ in one of the most central avenues. The building was transformed into a cultural center for events and meeting rooms, a “Karpathian House” with the traditional sofa, a library and offices for the societies. It is considered one of the best Greek American cultural centers in America.
After the purchase and modification of the building, the Foundation continued fund raising to increase its income. The loan and the contractor who undertook to reform the building and the configuration of the “Karpathian House” had to be paid. Added to the old events was Bingo, which contributed more than $100,000. The loan related to the Karpathian House was paid off and part of the building was rented. The Foundation has acquired property worth millions of dollars which yields a respectable income for the realization of the purposes of the Foundation.
Scholarships
Along with the creation of the “Karpathian House”, the Foundation turned its interest to the studying youth. For more than 40 years the scholarships program which was inherited from the Karpathian Federation continues. Each year, the scholarship celebration honors the achievements of the new generation in the sciences, arts and letters and awards scholarships to Karpathians youth attending higher education institutions. Several Karpathians hold prestigious positions in Universities, private companies and government agencies, and many young people are studying at the most prestigious universities.
Memorial Service
Since 1988 on the Sunday that coincides with the “Sabbat of souls”, the Foundation has held a Pan-Karpathian memorial service in one of New Jersey churches frequented by many Karpathians (St. Demetrius in Union, St. George in Clifton, St. Athanasius in Paramus) in memory of the deceased members and benefactors and those donated in their memory. Most of those who attend the memorial are from New Jersey and New York, but also from distant cities and states of America, even from Greece.
After the Divine Liturgy and the memorial service, a reception is held in the church hall, where a meal is offered with traditional Karpathian food, sweets, fruit, coffee, soft drinks, donations in memory of our compatriots, for the whole church congregation. In the program that follows, the photos of more than 700 memorialized are shown with short biographies, and in between, traditional Karpathian obituaries songs are recited: “The daughter who wants to go to the Upper World” and “The shepherd fights with Charon”. Sometimes soprano Nicolette Mavroleon sang “Ave Maria” by Fran Schubert and “Allerseelen” by Richard Straus and Julia Vergi sang “Amazing Grace” by John Newton.
Several times in the summer in Karpathos, with the cooperation of the Holy Metropolis, a Pan-Karpathian hierarchal memorial service was held by Metropolitan Ambrosios in the Metropolitan church in Aperi, in Vangelistra in Pigadia and in Panagia Plagia in Volada, and followed the established cultural program.
Culture
Among the Foundation’s other activities is the organization of honorary dinners in honor of the great benefactors Nick and Olympia Kouros, and to Doctor Michael Gergatsoulis for his great services to the Foundation. The Foundation organized book presentations and with the cooperation of the Federation presented a Karpathian wedding and other traditional customs. It also financially supported the publication “Prehistoric Karpathos” by Professor Manolis Melas and the “History of the Karpathian Community of America” by Manolis Cassotis.
