1. B”H The pending visit to Canada and U.S. by the general-secretary Dimitris Kotsbas of the Greek Communist Party is rife with contradictions and ample irony. Can anyone imagine the apotheosis of an ingrate who doesn’t recognize the country’s success in repulsing a communist takeover in the civil war, circa 1945-49? How about the communist’s continued attacks on our America and its ally Israel? Then, of course, ever-dogmatic, siding with the barbarous Hamas murderous/torturers in the ongoing Israeli operations to root them out; there’s perverse consistency in his identification with the wrong sides of history! There’s a personal dimension as well in his misbegotten journey to the headquarters of capitalism —- will he attend an opening bell of the N.Y. Stock Exchange? My late Uncle Baruch C. Fought in the Greek resistance against Nazi occupation on the leftists’ side. Following the salvation of Greece for the West, with America’s support in the Truman Doctrine, my uncle accepted the return to normalcy by becoming a successful businessman and siring a half a dozen kids. When our family came to America in 1956, it was natural for me to inquire and expect that our Greek Jewish contingent would be augmented by his multi-membered family. It was not to be, nor did my uncle attempt to chance applying for emigration; during the Red Scare induced by another xenophobia and fearful politician, Senator Joseph McCarthy, my relative’s links to his former comrades in arms disqualified! Instead, several of his children found a haven in the news rising Jewish State that was founded in 1948! My hope is that this latter-day Red leader will experience an epiphany while in the New World; and without holding the expectation that he will serve as the vehicle for an unlikely ideological repentance, especially reducing the effect the social disease of anti-Semitism has on my compatriots, left, right and of moderate persuasion in our native land! A mind is a terrible thing to waste, and Greeks have long suffered from embracing anti-Americanism-Semitism-Zionism-homophobia-racism, and not only.
