Στο διάστημα του πολέμου οι Ιταλοί στρατιώτες για να ξεχάσουν τον πόλεμο και να περάσουν την ώρα τους τραγουδούσαν τραγούδια της πατρίδας τους αλλά και το «Lili Marlene».
Η Marie Magdalene Dietrich γεννήθηκε στην Γερμανία και ήταν φημισμένη για το καλλιτεχνικό της ταλέντο και την εξωτική ομορφιά. Το 1929 μετανάστευσε στην Αμερική όπου εξελίχθηκε σε μια από τις πιο γνωστές ηθοποιούς και τραγουδίστριες και από την σύμπτυξη των ονομάτων Marie Magdalene, προέκυψε το καλλιτεχνικό της όνομα “Marlene”.
Μετά που ο Χίτλερ ανέλαβε την εξουσία την κάλεσε να έλθει στην Γερμανία για την δημιουργία κινηματογραφικού έργου. Αλλά αυτή εμφορούμενη από αντιναζιστικά φρονήματα αρνήθηκε με αποτέλεσμα ο Χίτλερ να απαγορεύσει την προβολή των έργων της στην Γερμανία. Μετά που άρχισε ο πόλεμος απαγόρευσε και την από ραδιοφώνου μετάδοση του αντιπολεμικού τραγουδιού «Lili Marlene». Η απαγόρευση, του τόσο αγαπητού τραγουδιού, είχε αρνητική επίδραση στο ηθικό των Γερμανών στρατιωτών που ανάγκασε τον Χίτλερ να επιτρέψει την αναμετάδοση του.
Οι Ιταλοί στρατιώτες ερχόμενοι στην Κάρπαθο έφεραν μαζί τους και το «Lili Marlene» που είχε μεταφραστεί και μελοποιηθεί και στην Ιταλική. Αυτή την εποχή τα ραδιόφωνα που υπήρχαν στην Κάρπαθο ήταν ελάχιστα και οι στρατιώτες δεν ήταν εύκολο να απολαύσουν το «Lili Marlene». Γι’ αυτό πολλές φορές βλέπαμε ομάδες στρατιωτών μέσα σε κάποιο χωράφι ή και σε αίθουσα, και καμιά φορά με την συνοδεία ακορντεόν και βιολιού να τραγουδούν το «Lili Marlene». Οι Καρπάθιοι ακόμη και τα παιδιά που το άκουγαν, χωρίς να γνωρίζουν Ιταλικά, το μόνο που καταλάβαιναν ήταν ότι οι στρατιώτες ζητούσαν να γυρίσει κοντά τους η Lili Marlene.
Το «Lili Marlene» στιχουργήθηκε και μελοποιήθηκε στην Γερμανική και μεταφράστηκε σε πολλές άλλες γλώσσες. Ακολουθούν οι μεταφράσεις στην Ιταλική, Αγγλική και Ελληνική γλώσσα.

During the war, the Italian soldiers, to forget the war and pass their time, sang songs of their homeland, including “Lili Marlene”.
Marie Magdalene Dietrich was born in Germany and was famous for her artistic talent and exotic beauty. In 1929 she immigrated to America where she became one of the most famous actresses and singers and from the contraction of the names Marie Magdalene, her artistic name “Marlene” emerged.
After Hitler took power, he invited her to come to Germany to create a film. But she imbued with anti-Nazi ideas refused, and Hitler banned the showing of her films in Germany. After the war started, he also banned the radio broadcast of the anti-war song “Lili Marlene”. The banning of the much-loved song had such a negative effect on the morale of the German soldiers that forced Hitler to allow its rebroadcast.
The Italian soldiers coming to Karpathos brought with them “Lili Marlene” which had been translated and set to music in Italian. At that time there were few radios in Karpathos, and it was not easy for the soldiers to enjoy “Lili Marlene”. That is why we often saw groups of soldiers in a field or in a hall, and sometimes accompanied by an accordion and a violin singing “Lili Marlene”. The Karpathians and even the children who heard it, not knowing Italian, all they understood was that the soldiers were asking for Lili Marlene to come back to them.
“Lili Marlene” was composed and set to music in German and translated into many other languages. At the end are the translations in Italian, English and Greek.
