Πριν από 80 χρόνια, στις 6 Ιουνίου 1944, έγινε η Συμμαχική απόβαση στη Νορμανδία, η μεγαλύτερη πολεμική απόβαση στην παγκόσμια ιστορία και ένα από τα σημαντικότερα πολεμικά γεγονότα του Δευτέρου Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου. Μεταξύ των ομογενών που υπηρέτησαν με τον Αμερικανικό στρατό και πήραν μέρος στην απόβαση στην Νορμανδία και στις πολεμικές επιχειρήσεις που ακολούθησαν υπήρχαν αρκετοί Δωδεκανήσιοι, μεταξύ αυτών και οι ακόλουθοι για τους οποίους υπάρχουν πληροφορίες.
Ο Δημήτρης Δαλιάνης, γιος του Ευθυμίου Δαλιάνη από την Εύβοια και της Μαρίας Παντελή από την Κάρπαθο, αποβιβάστηκε στο Omaha beach και πήρε μέρος σε πολλές και σκληρές μάχες και σκοτώθηκε, στις 4 Αυγούστου 1944, κοντά στην πόλη Coutances της Γαλλίας.
Ο Αντώνης Γιωργάκης, από την Νίσυρο, πήρε μέρος στην απόβαση της Νορμανδίας και στη συνέχεια υπηρέτησε υπό τον στρατηγό George Patton. Σε μια μάχη τραυματίστηκε σοβαρά και τον μετέφεραν σε νοσοκομείο της Αγγλίας όπου νοσηλεύθηκε. Μετά την αποθεραπεία του, επέστρεψε στην μονάδα του και υπηρέτησε μέχρι που τελείωσε ο πόλεμος. Ο Γιωργάκης παρασημοφορήθηκε με το Purple Heart.
Ο Νίκος Μακρής, από την Κάρπαθο, αποβιβάστηκε στο Utah Beach με την 80η Μεραρχία. Πήρε μέρος στην κατάληψη της πόλης LeMans και στο πέρασμα του ποταμού Moselle, όπου τραυματίστηκε. Μετά την ανάρρωση του επανήλθε στη θέση του, διέσχισε την βόρεια Γαλλία και το Βέλγιο, μπήκε στη Γερμανία και μέχρι να τελειώσει ο πόλεμος έφτασε στην Αυστρία και στην Τσεχοσλοβακία. Ο Μακρής παρασημοφορήθηκε με το Purple Heart και Bronze Star.
Οι Μιχάλης Βασιλάκης και Αντώνης Λογοθέτης, από την Κάρπαθο, αποβιβάστηκαν στο Utah Beach με την 26η Μεραρχία. Πολέμησαν κατά μήκος του καναλιού Salonnes-Moncourt και πήραν μέρος στη Μάχη της Ardennes, πέρασαν το ποταμό και προχώρησαν μέχρι που παραδόθηκε η Γερμανία.
Ο Γεώργιος Λέου, από την Κάρπαθο, υπηρέτησε με την17η μεραρχία αλεξιπτωτιστών και πήρε μέρος στις μάχες για την κατάληψη των πόλεων Neufchateau, Morhet, Flamierge, Honffalize, Wattermal, Espeler, Eschweiler και Clervaux και στη περίφημη μάχη «Οf Dead Man’s Ridge». Επίσης πήρε μέρος στην επιχείρηση Varsity όπου έπεσε με αλεξίπτωτο και τραυματίστηκε. Ο Λέου παρασημοφορήθηκε με το Purple Heart.
WWII – Dodecanese in the Normandy Landing

80 years ago, on June 6, 1944, the Allied landings took place in Normandy, the largest military landing in world history and one of the most important military events of WWII. Among the Greek Americans who served with the American army and took part in the Normandy landing and the military operations that followed there were several Dodecanese, among them the following for whom there is information.
Dimitris Dalianis, son of Efthymios Dalianis from Evia and Maria Pantelis from Karpathos, landed on Omaha beach and took part in many tough battles and was killed on August 4, 1944, near the town of Coutances, France.
Anthony Giorgakis, from Nisyros, took part in the Normandy landings and then served under General George Patton. In a battle he was seriously injured and was taken to a hospital in England where he was treated. After his recovery, he returned to his unit and served until the war ended. Giorgakis was awarded the Purple Heart.
Nick Makris, from Karpathos, landed at Utah Beach with the 80th Division. He took part in the capture of the city of LeMans and the crossing of the Moselle River, where he was wounded. After his recovery he returned to his post, crossed northern France and Belgium, entered Germany and by the end of the war had reached Austria and Czechoslovakia. Makris was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
Michael Vassilakis and Anthony Logothetis, from Karpathos, landed at Utah Beach with the 26th Division. They fought along the Salonnes-Moncourt Canal and took part in the Battle of the Ardennes, crossed the river and advanced until Germany surrendered.
George Leou, from Karpathos, served with the 17th Parachute Division and took part in the battles for the capture of Neufchateau, Morhet, Flamierge, Honffalize, Wattermal, Espeler, Eschweiler and Clervaux and in the famous battle “Of Dead Man’s Ridge”. He also took part in Operation Varsity where he parachuted and was injured. Leou was awarded the Purple Heart.
