Στην Βόρειο, Νότιο και Κεντρική Αμερική και σε νησιά της Καραϊβικής υπάρχουν 306 πόλεις, κωμοπόλεις, χωριά και τοποθεσίες με ελληνικά ονόματα. Τα περισσότερα, 285, βρίσκονται στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες, όπου μια από της Πολιτείες έχει Ελληνικό όνομα. Οι υπόλοιπες 18 πόλεις βρίσκονται σε επτά άλλες χώρες. Στη Βραζιλία, εκτός από τέσσερις πόλεις με ελληνικά ονόματα και το εθνικό πάρκο Παρνασός, δωρεά του Καστελοριζιού Σάββα Νικολάου Σάββα, υπάρχουν άλλες 118 πόλεις που έχουν ως δεύτερο συνθετικό του ονόματος τους την λέξη «polis» (πόλη).
Το ίδιο συμβαίνει και με 11 πόλεις στις ΗΠΑ και με μία στην Ουρουγουάη. Τα περισσότερα απ’ αυτά τα ονόματα, έχουν σχέση με την αρχαία Ελλάδα και δόθηκαν από θαυμαστές του αρχαίου ελληνικού πολιτισμού. Ορισμένες ονομασίες, όπως Αλέξανδρος και Αλεξάνδρεια (30 φορές), Τροία (22), Ρόδος (22), Αθήνα (20), Αρκαδία (16), Σπάρτη (14) και το Εύρηκα-Εύρηκα του Αρχιμήδη (18) είναι ιδιαίτερα δημοφιλείς. Από όλες τις πολιτείες, πόλεις, κωμοπόλεις, χωριά και τοπωνύμια που αναφέρονται στην συνέχεια έχουν Δωδεκανησιακά ονόματα ή συνδέονται με τα Δωδεκάνησα.
Rhode Island
Το 1524 ο Ιταλός εξερευνητής Giovanni da Verrazano έφθασε με το πλοίο του στο σημερινό λιμάνι της Νέας Υόρκης και συνέχισε ανατολικά, ακολουθώντας την νότια ακτή του Long Island. Όταν έφτασε στην ανατολική άκρη του, στράφηκε προς βορρά, μέχρι που συνάντησε κάποιο άλλο νησί. Στην έκθεσή του προς τον βασιλιά Francis 1ο της Γαλλίας ανέφερε ότι το νησί αυτό έμοιαζε με τη Ρόδο. Το 1582, σ’ ένα βιβλίο με τον τίτλο “Various Voyages” (Διάφορα ταξίδια), που έγραψε ο Άγγλος Richard Hackloyd (καταγράφεται και ως Hakluyt), αναφερόμενος στην επίσκεψη του Verrazano, έγραψε ότι το νησί θύμιζε στον Verrazano τη Ρόδο της Μεσογείου.
Αρκετά χρόνια αργότερα, Άγγλοι, υπό τον πάστορα Roger Williams, αποίκησαν το νησί, που το διεκδικούσαν όμως και οι Ολλανδοί με κάποιο άλλο όνομα. Για να αντιμετωπίσει τις ολλανδικές διεκδικήσεις, ο Williams ζήτησε από το Γενικό Δικαστήριο της Αγγλίας να αναγνωρίσει το νησί με την ονομασία Rhodes. Το 1663 ο βασιλιάς Charles 2ος της Αγγλίας υιοθέτησε το όνομα αυτό, όταν εξέδωσε τον καταστατικό χάρτη για την αποικία.
Αργότερα το ίδιο όνομα επεκτάθηκε και σ’ ολόκληρη την αποικία επί της αμερικανικής ηπείρου. Το 1776 με την Αμερικανική Επανάσταση της Ανεξαρτησίας, η αποικία τουRhode Island απετέλεσε μια από τις 13 αρχικές πολιτείες των ΗΠΑ. Σήμερα, ο πληθυσμός του Rhode Island ανέρχεται σε 1.100.000 κατοίκους.
Rhodes
Στην Αμερική υπάρχουν 22 μικρές πόλεις, χωριά και τοποθεσίες, και δυο στον Καναδά, με το όνομα Rhodes.
Στην πολιτεία Alabama βρίσκονται τα χωριά Rhodes και Rhodes Ville ή Rhodes Mill.
Στην πολιτεία California βρίσκεται το χωριό Rhodes 750 κατοίκων.
Μεταξύ των Key West Island της Florida βρίσκεται το νησάκι Old Rhodes Key.
Στην πολιτεία Illinois βρίσκεται το χωριό Rhodes.
Στην πολιτεία Indiana στην Clinton Township της Vermillion County βρίσκεται το χωριό Rhodes που ιδρύθηκε το 1903 από ανθρακωρύχους, πιθανότατα από Ρόδιους που δούλευαν στα ανθρακωρυχεία της περιοχής.
Στην πολιτεία Iowa υπάρχει το χωριό Rhodes 300 κατοίκων.
Στην πολιτεία Kansas βρίσκονται δυο χωριά που ονομάζονται Rhodes.
Στην πολιτεία Louisiana στηνAllen Parish βρίσκεται το χωριό Rhodes.
Στην πολιτεία Maryland πάνω στο νησί Smith Island στην Chesapeake Bay, υπάρχει το παραλιακό χωριό Rhodes Point, 200 κατοίκων.
Στην πολιτεία Michigan στην Bentley Township στην Gladwin County υπάρχει το χωριό Rhodes 2.000 κατοίκων. Στην ίδια πολιτεία υπάρχει και δεύτερο χωριό με την ονομασία Rhodes.
Στην πολιτεία Mississippi στην Perry County υπάρχει η πόλη Rhodes, 7.600 κατοίκων. Επίσης, στην Jones και Wayne counties υπάρχουν άλλα δυο χωριά με την ονομασία Rhodes.
Στην πολιτεία Montana στην Flathead County υπάρχει το χωριό Rhodes, 150 κατοίκων. Στην ίδια πολιτεία υπάρχει και δεύτερο χωριό με την ονομασία Rhodes.
Στην πολιτεία Nevada στην Mineral County υπάρχει το χωριό Rhodes.
Στην πολιτεία New Mexico στην Siera County υπάρχει το χωριό Rhodes.
Παλαιότερα στην πολιτεία North Carolina υπήρχε το χωριό Rhodes που μετονομάστηκε σε Laster Road Community. Στην ίδια πολιτεία στην Bertie County βρίσκεται το χωριό Rhodes, και στο New River στην Onslow County βρίσκεται το ακρωτήριο Rhodes.
Στην πολιτεία Virginia βρίσκεται η κορυφογραμμή Rhodes Ridge.
Στην Manitoba του Καναδά κοντά στα χωριά Ninga και Wakopa βρίσκεται και το Rhodes.
Στο Ontario του Καναδά κοντά στο North Buxton και στο Oriole βρίσκεται το χωριό Rhodes.
Simi Valley CA
Στην πολιτεία California, μερικά μίλια ανατολικά του Los Angeles, σε μια εκτεταμένη κοιλάδα, βρίσκεται η Simi Valley, παλαιότερα ονομαζόταν Simiopolis και αργότερα, για συντομία, μετονομάστηκε Simi Valley. Με την αλματώδη ανάπτυξη του Los Angeles η Simi Valley έγινε προάστιο του με 126.000 κατοίκους. Στην Simi Valley βρίσκεται η βιβλιοθήκη του Αμερικανού προέδρου Regan.
Cassopolis MI
Στην πολιτεία Michigan βρίσκεται η Cassopolis με 1.700 κατοίκους. Το όνομα της προέρχεται από το όνομα της Cass County, της οποίας είναι πρωτεύουσα. Δεν έχει εξακριβωθεί από που προέρχεται η ονομασία της Cass County.
Patmos
Στην νοτιοδυτική άκρη της πολιτείας Arkansas στην Hempstead County, σε μια απέραντη πεδιάδα, βρίσκεται ένα χωριό 64 κατοίκων, που για θρησκευτικούς λόγους ονομάστηκε Patmos για να συνδεθεί το όνομα του με το νησί της Αποκάλυψης.
Στην πολιτεία Mississippi στην Sharkey County βρίσκεται το χωριό Patmos, 264 κατοίκων.
Cos
Στο νότιο άκρο της πολιτείας Connecticut και 50 μίλια από τη Νέα Υόρκη, βρίσκεται η πόλη Cos Cob, 6.770 κατοίκων.
Tarpon Springs FL – Greek City
Οι πρώτοι Δωδεκανήσιοι σφουγγαράδες έφτασαν στα νησιά Bahamas γύρω στο 1890 και απ’ εκεί στο Tarpon Springs. Ο πρώτος γνωστός Δωδεκανήσιος που έφτασε στο Tarpon Springs, το 1896, ήταν ο καπετάν Νικολής του Γιάννουκα από τη Χάλκη. H ομαδική εγκατάσταση των Δωδεκανησίων σφουγγαράδων από την Κάλυμνο, Σύμη και Χάλκη άρχισε το 1905. Σύντομα το Tarpon Springs αναπτύχθηκε σε μια μικρή πόλη που πήρε ελληνικό χαρακτήρα και σαν προέκταση της Δωδεκανήσου στο Νέο Κόσμο, και έμεινε γνωστή ως το Greek City μεταξύ των Αμερικανών.
Ακόμη και σήμερα το Tarpon Springs διατηρεί το δωδεκανησιακό του χαρακτήρα, αφού αρκετοί από τους δημάρχους και άλλοι αξιωματούχοι του Tarpon Springs είναι Δωδεκανησιακής καταγωγής, όπως ο πρώην ομοσπονδιακός βουλευτής της Florida Μιχάλης Μπιλιράκης, και νυν ο γιος του Κώστας Μπιλιράκης. Εκτός των απογόνων των Δωδεκανησίων σφουγγαράδων και άλλοι Δωδεκανήσιοι, από τις βόρειες πολιτείες, μετακομίζουν στο Tarpon Springs όταν πάρουν τη σύνταξη τους. Ο πληθυσμός του Tarpon Springs ανέρχεται στις 26.000.
Nicholson town WV
Από τους πρωτοπόρους Δωδεκανησίους μετανάστες της Αμερικής ήταν ο Καρπάθιος Χατζημανώλης Νικολάου Αλεξιάδης που εγκαταστάθηκε στο Wheeling WV, και προτού έλθει στην Αμερική πήγε στο Αϊδίνι της Μικράς Ασίας και στο Σουδάν και απέκτησε επιχειρηματική πείρα. Αν και εγκαταστάθηκε σε ανθρακοφόρα περιοχή δεν δούλεψε σε ανθρακωρυχεία, αλλά ασχολήθηκε με επιχειρήσεις.
Εκείνη την εποχή, κοντά σε κάθε ανθρακωρυχείο, η εταιρεία που το εκμεταλλευόταν έκτιζε σπίτια που ενοικίαζε στους εργάτες, και μαγαζιά που ψώνιζαν με πίστωση. Γινόταν όμως μεγάλη εκμετάλλευση σε βάρος των ανθρακωρύχων, επειδή η εταιρεία είχε το μονοπώλιο. Κοντά σε μια καρβουνόμινα, που δούλευαν αρκετοί Καρπάθιοι και άλλοι Έλληνες, ο Χατζημανώλης έκτισε ένα μαγαζί και μερικά σπίτια. Απέκτησε μεγάλη πελατεία, επειδή οι τιμές και τα ενοίκια ήταν πιο συμφέροντα για τους ανθρακωρύχους. Με τον καιρό έκτισε και άλλα σπίτια και σχηματίσθηκε μικρός οικισμός, όπου έμεναν μερικές εκατοντάδες ανθρακωρύχοι, και μεταξύ των Ελλήνων της περιοχής έγινε γνωστός ως το χωριό του Χατζημανώλη.
Όταν, ο Χατζημανώλης ζήτησε από την Πολιτεία να αναγνωρισθεί το χωριό, ζήτησε να ονομασθεί Nicholson town. Ο Χατζημανώλης είχε αλλάξει το επίθετο του από Αλεξιάδης σε Nicholas, που ήταν το πατρώνυμό του, για να αποφύγει τις φυλετικές διακρίσεις των Αγγλοσαξόνων σε βάρος των νέων μεταναστών. Με την παρακμή των ανθρακωρυχείων παρήκμασε το Nicholson town και εγκαταλείφθηκε. Έμεινε μόνο η ονομασία του.
Frorianopolis
Εξακόσια μίλια νότια από το Rio de Janeiro της Βραζιλίας και πολύ κοντά στην Νοτιοαμερικανική Ήπειρο βρίσκεται το νησί Santa Catarina με πρωτεύουσα την Florianopolis, μια πόλη 400.000 κατοίκων, που είναι η πρωτεύουσα της πολιτείας Santa Catarina με πληθυσμό πάνω από 5.000.000 κατοίκους. Η Florianopolis, γνωστή ως το Νέο Καστελόριζο, ιδρύθηκε το 1892 από τον Καστελοριζιό καπετάνιο Σάββα Ν. Σάββα.
Greece NY
Στην πολιτεία της Νέας Υόρκης, επί της νοτίου ακτής της λίμνης Ontario, βρίσκεται η πόλη Greece, που πήρε το όνομα της, το 1822, προς τιμή της Ελληνικής Επανάστασης του 1821. Το 1997 όταν η πόλη Greece γιόρταζε τα 175 της χρόνια αδελφοποιήθηκε με την Ρόδο. Σήμερα, η πόλη έχει πληθυσμό γύρω στους 100.000 κατοίκους και αποτελεί το σπουδαιότερο εμπορικό κέντρο της Μητροπολιτικής περιφέρειας του Rochester.
Dodecanese Toponyms in America

In North, South and Central America and on Caribbean islands there are 306 cities, towns, villages and localities with Greek names. Most, 285, are in the United States, where one of the states has a Greek name. The remaining 18 cities are in seven other countries. In Brazil, apart from four cities with Greek names and the Parnassos National Park, a gift of the Kastelorizian Savvas Nickolas Savvas, there are 118 other cities that have the word “polis” as the second part of their name.
So are 11 cities in the US and one in Uruguay. Most of these names are related to ancient Greece and were given by admirers of the ancient Greek culture. Certain names such as Alexander and Alexandria (30 times), Troy (22), Rhodes (22), Athens (20), Arcadia (16), Sparta (14) and Archimedes’ Eureka-Eureka (18) are particularly popular. Of all the states, cities, towns, villages and toponyms listed below have Dodecanese names or are associated with the Dodecanese.
Rhode Island
In 1524 the Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazano arrived with his ship in what is now New York Harbor and continued east, following the southern shore of Long Island. When he reached its eastern end, he turned north until he met another island. In his report to King Francis I of France he mentioned that this island resembled Rhodes. In 1582, in a book entitled “Various Voyages”, written by the Englishman Richard Hackloyd (also listed as Hakluyt), referring to Verrazano’s visit, he wrote that the island reminded Verrazano of Rhodes of the Mediterranean.
Several years later, the English, under pastor Roger Williams, colonized the island, which was also claimed by the Dutch under a different name. To counter the Dutch claims, Williams asked the General Court of England to recognize the island as Rhodes. In 1663, King Charles II of England adopted this name, when he issued the charter for the colony.
Later the same name was extended to the entire colony on the American continent. In 1776 with the American Revolution of Independence, the colony of Rhode Island became one of the 13 original US states. Today, Rhode Island has a population of 1,100,000.

Simi Valley CA
In the state of California, a few miles east of Los Angeles, in an extensive valley, is Simi Valley, formerly called Simiopolis and later, for brevity, renamed Simi Valley. With the rapid growth of Los Angeles, Simi Valley became its suburb with 126,000 inhabitants. In Simi Valley is the library of the American president Regan.
Cassopolis MI
In the state of Michigan is Cassopolis with 1,700 inhabitants. Its name comes from the name of Cass County, of which it is the capital. The origin of the name Cass County has not been ascertained.
Patmos
At the southwestern edge of the state of Arkansas in Hempstead County, on a vast plain, is a village of 64 inhabitants, which for religious reasons was named Patmos to connect its name with the island of the Apocalypse.

At the southern end of the state of Connecticut and 50 miles from New York City, is the town of Cos Cob, population 6,770.
Tarpon Springs FL – Greek City
The first Dodecanese sponge divers arrived in Bahamas around 1890 and from there to Tarpon Springs. The first known Dodecanese to arrive at Tarpon Springs, in 1896, was Captain Nicholas Giannoukas from Chalki. The group settlement of the Dodecanese sponge divers from Kalymnos, Symi and Halki began in 1905. Soon Tarpon Springs developed into a small town that took a Greek character and as an extension of the Dodecanese to the New World and became known as the Greek City among Americans.
Even today, Tarpon Springs maintains its Dodecanese character, since several of the mayors and other officials of Tarpon Springs are of Dodecanese descent, such as former Florida congressman Michalis Bilirakis, and now his son Kostas Bilirakis. Besides the descendants of the Dodecanese sponger divers, other Dodecanese, from the northern states, move to Tarpon Springs when they retire. Tarpon Springs has a population of 26,000.
Nicholson town WV
Among the pioneer Dodecanese immigrants to America was the Karpathian Hatzimanolis Nicholas Alexiadis who settled in Wheeling WV, and before coming to America went to Aidini in Asia Minor and Sudan and gained business experience. Although he settled in a coal-bearing region he did not work in coal mines but engaged in business.
At that time, near each coal mine, the company that operated it built houses that were rented to the workers, and stores where they shopped on credit. But there was great exploitation at the expense of the miners because the company had a monopoly. Near a coal mine, where several Κarpathians and other Greeks worked, Hatzimanolis built a shop and some houses. It gained a large clientele because the prices and rents were more favorable to the miners. Over time he built other houses, and a small settlement was formed, where a few hundred miners lived, and among the Greeks of the area it became known as Hatzimanolis’ village.
When Hatzimanolis asked the State to recognize the village, he requested to be called Nicholson town. Hatzimanolis had changed his surname from Alexiadis to Nicholas, which was his patronymic, to avoid the racial discrimination of the Anglo-Saxons at the against the new immigrants. With the decline of the coal mines Nicholson town declined and was abandoned. Only its name remained.
Florianopolis
Six hundred miles south of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and very close to the South American Continent, is Santa Catarina Island with its capital at Florianopolis, a city of 400,000 inhabitants, the capital of the state of Santa Catarina with a population of over 5,000,000. Florianopolis, known as New Kastelorizo, was founded in 1892 by Kastelorizian captain Savvas N. Savvas.
Greece NY In the state of New York, on the southern shore of Lake Ontario, is the city of Greece, which took its name in 1822, in honor of the Greek Revolution of 1821. In 1997, when the city of Greece celebrated its 175th anniversary, it was twinned with Rhodes. Today, the city has a population of around 100,000 and is the largest commercial center in the Rochester Metropolitan area.
