Στη Νοτιοανατολική άκρη του Αιγαίου βρίσκεται η «ανεμόεσα» Κάρπαθος όπως αποκαλείται στους Ομηρικούς Ύμνους, και όπως ταξιδεύει μόνη της μέσα στο ανεμοδαρμένο Καρπάθιο πέλαγος κράτησε αρκετά από τα έθιμα της που πηγαίνουν αιώνες πίσω και αποτελούν αξιόλογη λαογραφική προσφορά. Μεταξύ των εθίμων που διασώθηκαν, την πρώτη θέση κατέχει η ποιητική παράδοση του νησιού που μας παίρνει στην εποχή του Ομήρου. Με 15σύλαβα δίστιχα, οι Καρπάθιοι συνεχίζουν να εκφράζουν τις χαρές και τις λύπες τους.
Αυτό το ποιητικό ταλέντο μαζί με την λύρα και την τσαμπούνα, οι πρώτοι Καρπάθιοι μετανάστες ερχόμενοι στην Αμερική το κουβάλησαν μαζί τους και το μεταδίδουν από γενιά σε γενιά μέσω των συλλόγων τους.
Με την δημιουργία της Σποΐτικης παροικίας στην North and South Carolina υπήρξε αναγκαία η ίδρυση του Συλλόγου Σποϊτών Άγιος Γεώργιος στο Wellford SC και η δημιουργία του Σποΐτικου Σπιτιού, μέσα στο οποίο χαλκεύονται τα Καρπαθιακά έθιμα, μεταξύ των οποίων και η ποιητική παράδοση της Καρπάθου.
Έτσι ο Σύλλογος αποφάσισε την καθιέρωση διαγωνισμού μαντινάδας με πρώτο θέμα τους καημούς της ξενιτιάς, με αυτό το τρόπο αυτοί που φεύγουν εκφράζουν τον πόνο τους και ζουν με την ελπίδα της επιστροφής, και αυτοί που μένουν και περιμένουν με την ελπίδα να γυρίσουν οι «καλοί» τους. Λόγω της ποιητικής συγγενείας που υπάρχει μεταξύ Καρπάθου και Κάσου, ο διαγωνισμός συμπεριλαμβάνει και τα δύο νησιά. Ιδιαίτερες προσπάθειες για την ευρύτερη συμμετοχή στον διαγωνισμό κατέβαλε ο πρόεδρος του Ινστιτούτου Λαογραφίας Καρπάθου του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών Ηλίας Βασιλαράς.
Ως Κρητική Επιτροπή των μαντινάδων ο Σύλλογος όρισε τους Ευμορφία Διακογεωργίου, Γιάννη Θεοδωράκη, Γιώργο Κανάκη, Μανώλη Κ. Λαμπρίδη και Μανώλη Νικολάκη, γνώστες και μελετητές του παραδοσιακού τραγουδιού των δυο νησιών. Επίσης χωρίς το δικαίωμα ψήφου συμμετείχε και ο πρόεδρος του Συλλόγου Γιώργος Σισαμής. Προς αποφυγή παρεξήγησης περί μεροληψίας, τα ονόματα των συντακτών των μαντινάδων κωδικοποιήθηκαν χωρίς να γίνουν γνωστά στα μέλη της Κρητικής επιτροπής. Την τεχνική επιμέλεια της βαθμολογίας της Κρητικής Επιτροπής ανέλαβε η Βασιλεία Παρδαλάκη.
Στον Διαγωνισμός συμμετείχαν αρκετοί Καρπαθο-Κασιώτες με 296 μαντινάδες, και σύμφωνα με ανακοίνωση του Συλλόγου στην πρώτη θέση ισοψήφησαν με 45 βαθμούς (50 το ανώτατο) οι μαντινάδες που ακολουθούν του Νίκου Παπαγεωργίου και της Μαρίας Γ. Σισαμή που θα μοιραστούν το βραβείο του Συλλόγου.

τα χείλη του θα πικραθού(ν) κι (δ)ε(ν) θα ξαναγελάσει.

Couplets’ competition Foreignness

At the South-Eastern edge of the Aegean is the “anemoesa” (windy) Karpathos as it is called in the Homeric Hymns, and as it travels alone in the windswept Karpathian sea it has kept many of its customs that go back centuries and are a valuable folklore contribution. Among the customs that have survived, the first place is occupied by the poetic tradition of the island which takes us to the time of Homer. With 15-syllable couplets, the Karpathians continue to express their joys and sorrows.
This poetic talent along with the lyre and the “tsabuna” (bagpipe), the first Karpathian immigrants coming to America carried with them and passed it down from generation to generation through their associations.
With the creation of the Karpathian Spoitian community in North and South Carolina, it was necessary to establish the Saint George Society in Wellford SC and the creation of the “Spoitian House”, in which the Karpathian customs are preserved, including the poetic tradition of Karpathos.
So, “Saint George” decided to establish couplet competition with the first theme the woes of the foreignness, in which, those who leave express their pain and live with the hope of returning, and those who stay behind wait with the hope that their beloved ones will return. Due to the poetic kinship between Karpathos and Kasos, the competition includes both islands. The president of the Institute of Karpathos Folklore of the University of Athens, Elias Vasilaras, made special efforts for the wider participation in the competition.
The Judging Committee appointed by the Association consisted of the connoisseurs and scholars of the traditional song of the two islands Eumorfia Diakogeorgiou, Yiannis Theodorakis, Giorgos Kanakis, Manolis K. Lampridis and Manolis Nikolakis. The president of the Association George Sisamis also participated without the right to vote. To avoid any misunderstanding of bias, the names of the couplets’ composers were coded without being known to the members of the Judging Committee. The technical editing of the Judging Committee’s score was undertaken by Vasileia Pardalaki.
Several Karpathians and Kasians participated in the competition with 296 couplets, and according to the Association’s announcement, the couplets of Nick Papageorgiou and Maria G. Sisami, who will share the Association’s prize, tied for first place with 45 points, maximum 50. (All couplets in free translation).
