ΝΕΑ ΥΟΡΚΗ. Ο ευπατρίδης, αγωνιστής, επιστήμονας, επιχειρηματίας και φιλάνθρωπος Σωτήριος Βαχαβιώλος χθες, Πέμπτη, 6η Φεβρουαρίου 2025, έχασε την τελευταία μάχη της ζωής του σε ηλικία 78 ετών έχοντας στο πλευρό την οικογένειά του.
Την θλιβερή είδηση ανακοίνωσε η ηγεσία του ομίλου «Mistras Group», αμέσως μετά την εκδημία του.
Ο αείμνηστος ήταν άνθρωπος με κεφαλαία, διακεκριμένος επιστήμονας, ο οποίος τίμησε όσο ελάχιστοι τον τόπο καταγωγής του και την ομογένεια ονομάζοντας τον όμιλό του σε «Μυστρά», τιμώντας την καταγωγή του.
Και με την ακούραστη εργασία, την σοφία και το δαιμόνιο της φυλής μας κατάφερε να τον αναβαθμίσει και να καταστήσει τον όμιλο «Mistras Group» κορυφαίο στον τομέα της «Ακουστικής Εκπομπής» ως μεθόδου Μη Καταστροφικών Ελέγχων για όλους τους τύπους των υποδομών, από γέφυρες έως και πυρηνικούς σταθμούς.
Η εταιρεία ιδρύθηκε το 1978 με έδρα το Princeton Junction, της Νέας Ιερσέης και σήμερα εν έτη 2025 προσφέρει εργασία σε πέντε περίπου χιλιάδες επιστήμονες και εργαζόμενους και μάλιστα θεωρείται ως ένας από τους ομίλους με τους περισσότερους επιστήμονες με διδακτορικούς τίτλους σπουδών (PhD).
Ο αείμνηστος – όπως και άλλοι Λάκωνες συναγωνιστές και φίλοι του – πίστευε στην ρήση των Αμερικανών συμπολιτών τους «sky is the limit». Στις αρχές του 2000 με την εξαγορά άλλων εταιρίων του κλάδου της ασφάλειας των υποδομών να μεγαλώσει τον όμιλο και να κατακτήσει την πρωτοκαθεδρία στον κλάδο.
Το 2009 αξιώθηκε να τον εισαγάγει στο Χρηματιστήριο Αξιών της Νέας Υόρκης και μάλιστα να κτυπήσει το καμπανάκι της έναρξης των εργασιών στην Γουόλ Στριτ.
Η εισαγωγή του Mistras Group στο ΧΑΑ της Νέας Υόρκης αποτέλεσε το γεγονός της χρονιάς για τους Λάκωνες της τριπολιτειακής περιοχής της Νέας Υόρκης και κατ΄επέκταση για την ομογένεια της Αμερικής, διότι ήταν ο πρώτος γεννημένος στην Ελλάδα Ελληνοαμερικανός, ο οποίος κτύπησε το καμπανάκι στην Γουόλ Στριτ.
Ο Σωτήριος Βαχαβιόλος ήταν αγωνιστής και ευπατρίδης και στις αρχές της πρώτης δεκαετίας του 21ου αιώνα διετέλεσε πρόεδρος της Επιτροπής Παρελάσεως της Νέας Υόρκης.
Με την ευσπλαχνία του και την γενναιοδωρία του έκανε την διαφορά και έδιδε το έναυσμα της κοινωνικής προσφοράς στα στελέχη του ομίλου του και στην νεότερη γενιά των Ελληνοαμερικανών.
Την τελευταία πενταετία η υγεία του κλονίστηκε και ο Σωτήριος Βαχαβιώλος αποσύρθηκε από τα καθήκοντά του ως προέδρου και διευθύνοντα συμβούλου και ανακηρύχτηκε επίτιμος πρόεδρος του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου του Mistras Group (Founder & Chairman Emeritus).

PRINCETON JUNCTION, N.J., Feb. 06, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Board of Directors of MISTRAS Group, Inc. (NYSE: MG) is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dr. Sotirios J. Vahaviolos, the company’s Founder, Chairman Emeritus, and Board Director, on Thursday, February 6, 2025.
A visionary leader and pioneer in the field of non-destructive testing (NDT) and acoustic emission (AE), Dr. Vahaviolos founded MISTRAS (originally Physical Acoustics Corporation) in 1978 and dedicated over four decades to building it into a global leader in testing, inspection, and asset protection solutions. His expertise, leadership, and commitment to excellence were instrumental in shaping the company’s strategic direction and fostering a culture of innovation that remains at the core of MISTRAS today.

Prior to founding MISTRAS, Dr. Vahaviolos was a scientist and manager at AT&T Bell Laboratories, where he honed his expertise in electrical engineering and advanced NDT technologies. A distinguished academic, he earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering (graduating first in his class) from Fairleigh Dickinson University, followed by an M.S., M.Phil., and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University School of Engineering.
Throughout his career, Dr. Vahaviolos was recognized as a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the American Society of Nondestructive Testing (ASNT), and the Acoustic Emission Working Group (AEWG). He also served as ASNT’s President (1992-1993) and Chairman (1993-1994) and received Gold Medals from ASNT (2001) and AEWG (2005) in recognition of his contributions to the field, in addition to several other accolades from various respected industry and scientific organizations.
Beyond his professional accolades, Dr. Vahaviolos was one of the six founders of NDT Academia International in 2008, further demonstrating his dedication to advancing nondestructive testing worldwide.
