ΝΕΑ ΥΟΡΚΗ. Απίστευτο και όμως γεγονός. Το επιτελείο του Δημάρχου της Νέας Υόρκης, Έρικ Άνταμς ανακάλεσε το Βραβείο Ελληνικής Κληρονομιάς που επρόκειτο να επιδοθεί στον επιχειρηματία και τέως υποψήφιο πολιτειακό γερουσιαστή της Νέας Υόρκης, Κωνσταντίνο Λαμπρόπουλο.
Το βραβείο επρόκειτο να απονεμηθεί το απόγευμα της Πέμπτης, 20ής Μαρτίου 2025 κατά την διάρκεια της καθιερωμένης δεξίωσης που παραθέτει ο εκάστοτε δήμαρχος της Νέας Υόρκης στην δημαρχιακή έπαυλη «Gracie Mansion».
Πρόκειται για μια παράδοση δεκαετιών, στην οποία ο εκάστοτε δήμαρχος ανακήρυττε την 25η Μαρτίου ως Ημέρα Ελληνικής Ανεξαρτησίας και Ελληνικής Κληρονομιάς για τον δήμο της Νέας Υόρκης και απένειμε διακηρύξεις στον πρόεδρο της Ομοσπονδίας Ελληνικών Σωματείων Μείζονος Νέας Υόρκης και στην Επιτροπή Παρελάσεως. Παράλληλα βραβεύονταν Ελληνοαμερικανοί για την προσφορά τους στην ομογένεια, στην πόλη και στην πολιτεία της Νέας Υόρκης.
Ο θεσμός αυτός είχε σκαμπανεβάσματα, αλλά την τελευταία δεκαετία ξεκινώντας από την πρώην δήμαρχο Μπιλ Ντι Μπλάσιο έχασε την αίγλη του. Κι αυτό διότι όταν ο Μπιλ Ντι Μπλάσιο βράβευσε τον δημοσιογράφο και τηλεπαρουσιαστή Έρνι Ανάστο – για ψηφοθηρικούς λόγους – αντί να κηρύξει την 25 Μαρτίου ως Ημέρα Ελληνικής Ανεξαρτησίας την ανακήρυξε «Ημέρα Έρνι Ανάστου».
Η ανάκληση στο παρά πέντε του Βραβείου Ελληνικής Κληρονομιάς στον ομογενή Κωνσταντίνο Λαμπρόπουλο προκάλεσε το ενδιαφέρον των τοπικών αμερικανικών μέσων ενημέρωσης, καθώς εις βάρους του Δημάρχου της Νέας Υόρκης έχουν επαγγελθεί κατηγορίες για διαφθορά και δωροδοκία από τους Τούρκους.
Η ημερήσια εφημερίδα Daily News (https://www.nydailynews.com/) στην χθεσινή της έκδοση φιλοξένησε το άρθρο με τίτλο «Το Δημαρχείο ανακάλεσε προγραμματισμένο βραβείο Ελληνικής Κληρονομιάς προκαλώντας καταγγελίες για πολιτικές σχετικά με τις δημαρχιακές εκλογές (City Hall revokes a planned Greek heritage award, sparking accusations of mayoral race politics).
Το ρεπορτάζ αναφέρει ότι στις 7 Μαρτίου το επιτελείο του Δημάρχου Έρικ Άνταμς κοινοποίησε στον Κωνσταντίνο Λαμπρόπουλο την απόφαση για την βράβευσή του μαζί με τρεις άλλους Ελληνοαμερικανούς.
Μετά από πέντε ημέρες και συγκεκριμένα στις 12 Μαρτίου ο κ. Λαμπρόπουλος έλαβε ένα νέο μήνυμα μέσω του οποίου του κοινοποιούνταν η απόφαση για την ανάκληση της βράβευσης.
Αν και το επιτελείο του Δημάρχου προσπάθησε να αιτιολογήσει την απόφαση με το γεγονός ότι με το ίδιο βραβείο έχει τιμηθεί στο παρελθόν η σύζυγός του Μαρία Μαρκου και πως δεν είθισται να απονέμουν το ίδιο βραβείο στην ίδια οικογένεια, εν τούτοις δεν έπεισε τους αρθρογράφους.
Στην πράξη πρόκειται για πρόσχημα, καθώς μεθαύριο θα τιμηθεί η Μάρκο Κατσιματίδη, σύζυγος του Τζον Κατσιματίδη που στο παρελθόν έχει βραβευτεί με το ίδιο βραβείο και ο ίδιος ο Κατσιματίδης.
Το ρεπορτάζ τηςDaily News αποδίδει την απόφαση στην στάση της Μαρίας Μάρκου, που ως ηγέτιδα του Δημοκρατικού Κόμματος για την 36η Περιφέρεια της Νέας Υόρκης φέρεται να στηρίζει την υποψηφιότητα του πρώην κυβερνήτη της Νέας Υόρκης, κ. Αντριου Κουόμο.
Η κ. Μάρκου απαντώντας σε ερώτηση των «Αναμνήσεων» αρνήθηκε να εισέλθει σε λεπτομέρειες σχετικά με την απόφαση της Επιτροπής της οποίας ηγείται και μας συνέστησε να αναμένουμε το επίσημο ανακοινωθέν.
Ωστόσο τόσο η κ. Μάρκου, όσο και άλλα στελέχη της ομογένειας έχουν ενοχληθεί σφόδρα από τις αποκαλύψεις του κατηγορητηρίου για δωροδοκία του δημάρχου από τους Τούρκους.
Ο Κωνσταντίνος Λαμπρόπουλος μιλώντας στους δημοσιογράφους επεσήμανε ότι στις αρχές Φεβρουαρίου το επιτελείο του Δημάρχου του κοινοποίησε την πρόθεσή τους για την βράβευση και ότι υπέβαλλε όλα τα δικαιολογητικά για τον απαιτούμενο έλεγχο.
Στις 5 Μαρτίου 2025 του κοινοποίησαν ότι πληροί όλες τις προϋποθέσεις και τα κριτήρια και τον κάλεσαν να προσκομίσει την λίστα με τους προσκεκλημένους της οικογένειας Λαμπρόπουλου για την επίσημη τελετή της 20ής Μαρτίου στο Gracie Mansion.
Την απόφαση για την ανάκληση του βραβείο ανακοίνωσε η κ. Valerie Vasquez, αναπληρώτρια επίτροπος για κοινωνικές υποθέσεις (Deputy Community Affairs Commissioner) και ο κ. Λαπρόπουλος της απάντησε με ένα αιχμηρό σχόλιο.
Χαρακτήρισε την ανάκληση ένα επί πλέον δείγμα ανευθυνότητας και κάλεσε την συνομιλήτριά του να ρωτήσει τον Δήμαρχο Έρικ Άνταμς πώς θα αισθάνονταν εάν έκαναν το ίδιο σε εκείνον.

City Hall revokes a planned Greek heritage award, sparking accusations of mayoral race politics
A reception at Gracie Mansion for the Greek-American community set for Thursday in advance of the group’s annual parade has stirred controversy after senior Adams administration officials revoked an award for one of the event’s honorees in the last minute.
On March 7, Mayor Adams’ office notified Astoria, Queens, businessman Gus Lambropoulos, a recent candidate for state Senate, that he would be one of four honorees at the reception for his many years of community service. The vetting for the award had lasted about a month.
Five days later, on March 12, after Lambropoulos had invited friends from other parts of the country to see him honored, Adams administration officials told him he wouldn’t get the award after all, the Daily News has learned.
Lambropoulos’ wife, Maria Markou, a lawyer and district leader in Astoria, was steamed.
“This is just another example of reckless judgment by the mayor’s administration in taking back an award from a worthy NYC citizen,” she said. Markou estimated the couple’s friends had spent some $7,500 to travel to the event.
Markou believes there were politics at play. She thinks City Hall changed course because it was aware she and other district leaders in Queens are planning next week to endorse ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s 2025 mayoral primary challenge against Adams.
“To congratulate, give it, and then take it back is a complete disrespect and a slap to our beloved Greek-American community,” she said.
Kayla Mamelak, a spokeswoman for Adams, said Lambropoulos was removed from the list after officials realized Markou had been honored at a similar heritage event two years ago and because some community members raised questions about whether he was the best person to be among those receiving the honor.
“It was also clear that this individual’s wife had received this exact same award two years prior,” Mamelak said.
Lambropoulos called that “ridiculous.”
“They say one thing and then they say another,” he said. “Everything is in the emails. They are just trying to cover up the story.”
Mamelak also said that heritage event awards are limited to one per household “so that we can recognize as many community members as possible.”
Markou said that’s surprising, given City Hall knew from the start the couple was married. The pair are both well known in the community.
“If there was a policy as they allege last minute, why did they do the vetting process, my husband passes it and they congratulate him and ask for the list of guests?” she said. “This does not make sense. I believe this is politically motivated by Eric Adams’ side.”
And on whether the couple’s plans to endorse Cuomo, Mamelak said the city had “no idea” who they were going to support in this year’s mayoral elections, and that it has “nothing to do” with who is selected for the awards.
Other honorees at this week’s Gracie event include Margo Vondersaar Catsimatidis, the wife of billionaire supermarket mogul John Catsimatidis, a major player in city politics who’s close to both Adams and Cuomo. On Feb. 27, Catsimatidis donated $20,000 as a sponsor of this month’s Greek Heritage parade on Fifth Ave. and is listed as a chairman emeritus of the organizing committee.
Catsimatidis told The News on Monday that he’s also a sponsor of this week’s Gracie Mansion event, which is seen as a pre-party for the parade, and plans to help pay for food and other “extra costs” associated with it.
He said his wife is a “good person” deserving of the award, but wouldn’t respond to Markou’s accusations other than to note that he has never met Lambropoulos.
Catsimatidis was also a sponsor of the same annual Hellenic event at Gracie Mansion in 2024.
Catsimatidis is a high-dollar political donor with extensive ties to President Trump’s orbit and has a radio show that’s influential in conservative circles.
The mogul has been a backer of the mayor, but has recently shown signs of warming up to Cuomo. He had Cuomo on his radio show on March 9.
A Cuomo spokesman declined to comment Monday.
Lambropoulos said he first learned he would be an honoree in early February as long as he passed a background check. He submitted his date of birth, bio and résumé to City Hall for vetting.
He works as a business consultant on real estate projects and describes himself as a 9/11 survivor and a two-time cancer survivor. He lost his bid for the state Senate last year in the Democratic primary to Kristen Gonzalez.
On March 7, Ido Shargal, senior adviser of the mayor’s community affairs unit, wrote to Lambropoulos to introduce him to Jayson Littman, director of events and protocol for the mayor’s office. “Jayson has informed me you passed vetting,” Shargal wrote, according to emails obtained by The News.
Littman then wrote in an email to Lambropoulos, “Congratulations on your honor!” Littman went on to write that honorees are approved for six guests and are asked for their contact info.
“Thank you so much,” Lambropoulos replied, copying Shargal. “My family will attend and are incredibly excited and humbly honored to be a part of this event.”
Five days later, Lambropoulos got a call from Deputy Community Affairs Commissioner Valerie Vasquez.
“She says, ‘I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your wife got the award two years ago,’” Lambropoulos said. “I had just told 100 people from all over to come.”
Lambropoulos appealed to Fred Kreizman, Adams’ community affairs commissioner.
“He just said, ‘It is what it is,’” Lambropoulos said.
In a text message to Lambropoulos provided to The News, Kreizman wrote, “[Your] wife received an award at this event two years ago and they didn’t realize that. It was a week too late but people failed in due diligence.”
Littman offered to still allow his guests to attend the event.
But Lambropoulos remains unsatisfied. “It’s just another way they are lacking responsibility and ownership for what they do,” he said. “How would the mayor feel if someone did that to him?”
