ΝΕΑ ΥΟΡΚΗ. Η νέα γενική Πρόξενος της Ελλάδας στη Νέα Υόρκη την προηγούμενη Πέμπτη αφίχθη στη Νέα Υόρκη και ανέλαβε και επισήμως τα καθήκοντά της.
Το πρωί της Δευτέρας, 16ης Σεπτεμβρίου 2024, ακολουθώντας την παράδοση επισκέφθηκε την Ιερά Αρχιεπισκοπή Αμερικής, όπου έγινε δεκτή και συνομίλησε με τον Αρχιεπίσκοπο Αμερικής, κ. Ελπιδοφόρο.
Στην συνάντηση παρέστησαν ο Επίσκοπος Ναζιανζού, κ. Αθηναγόρας και ο Επίσκοπος Διοκλείας και συνάμα πρωτοσύγκελος της Ιεράς Αρχιεπισκοπής, κ. Νεκτάριος.
Μετά το πέρας της επίσκεψης ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Αμερικής, κ. Ελπιδοφόρος ανήρτησε στον προσωπικό του λογαριασμό στα μέσα κοινωνικής δικτύωσης φωτογραφίες από την συνάντηση με την ακόλουθη δήλωση: «Με ιδιαίτερη χαρά υποδέχθηκα στην Ιερά Αρχιεπισκοπή Αμερικής την νέα Γενική Πρόξενο της Ελλάδας στη Νέα Υόρκη, κ. Ιφιγένεια Καναρά. Ευχόμαστε κάθε επιτυχία στο έργο της και ανυπομονούμε για μια καρποφόρα συνεργασία, με κοινό σκοπό την προσφορά στην αγαπημένη μας Ομογένεια».
Η κ. Ιφιγένεια Καναρά, όπως έγραψαν οι «Αναμνήσεις» διαδέχτηκε τον πρέσβη Ντίνο Κωνσταντίνου, ο οποίος μετά από δύο χρόνια ευδόκιμης υπηρεσίας αναχώρησε για την Αθήνα και στα τέλη του μήνα αναμένεται να αναχωρήσει για την Πράγα προκειμένου να αναλάβει τα καθήκοντα του πρεσβευτή της Ελλάδας στην Τσεχική Δημοκρατία.
Τέλος να σημειώσουμε ότι η Ιφιγένεια Καναρά, προέρχεται από την πρεσβεία της Ελλάδας στο Λονδίνο, όπου διατελούσε αναπληρώτρια επικεφαλής Αρχής. Η κ. Καναρά την προηγούμενη δεκαετία έχει διατελέσει γενική Πρόξενος της Ελλάδας στην Βοστώνη.

B”H The news of a new Greek diplomatic Consul in New York representing the tristate area of CT, NJ, NY, as well as PA, was most welcomed; perhaps for the dawn of improved, more responsive and sensitive and therefore more effective service. With those concerns in mind, the following letter was sent to the new envoy of our native land in our metropolis: Dear Incoming Consul General Ifigenia Kanara, My breath soars trying to keep up with rapidly developing news — alas, not where Ms. Yael Shemtov’s application for a Greek passport, which languishes in the bowels of your Consulate. First, was my earnest appeal that your predecessor be relieved of duty for lacking alacrity, sensitivity, and exhibiting lethargy in the aforementioned case. Then, suddenly, I learn of his relocation, and thought briefly and humbly this to be my persuasive prowess working with your prime minister and minister of foreign affairs. You can imagine my consternation that the diplomat’s removal from his post in New York was the evolution of a completed tour and the reassignment with the enhanced rank of Ambassador to represent our native land in Prague, Czechia! The Peter Principle is alive and lives in the turgid, notoriously ineffective Greek bureaucracy.
As you begin your tenure in the most desirable perch of any diplomatic assignment, I welcome you to our neighborhood; trusting that you shall easily surpass the very low bar set by your immediate predecessor — dramatically declining in quality of performance with the previous, distinguished Messrs. Konstantinos Koutras, and Yorgos Iliopoulos! In your future success it is imperative that you reach out to the diverse strands of our Greek American community, including the Jewish segment (I serve as the decades-old president of the 5T B’nai B’rith Lodge). In this pursuit, for I pledge to do much to have you write a page of rare excellence in Greek diplomacy, I want to petition for an early audience with you to update my/our concerns, including the status of the Shemtov application for a Greek passport that is now the privilege of expatriates or offspring of same.
